The Dragon and the Phoenix
A Sailor Moon / Ranma / Slayers crossover
Part 2, Chapter 3
By Figure 4

Lina watched the thing that called itself Dalgar cautiously. She had faced Monsters many times before, but that didnt make defeating one any easier. A Dragon Slave would more than likely be enough, but they were still in the middle of a town. Smaller spells might work. She couldnt be sure until she knew the full power of her opponent.

She began to prep a fireball spell in order to test the Monsters strength, but Ranma was suddenly engaging it in combat. Gaping at him, she wondered what kind of idiot fought a Monster head on and unarmed. Then she remembered that Ranma wasnt familiar with what a Monster was. "Get away from him Ranma!" she shouted.

Ranma either didnt hear her or chose to ignore her because he continued his attack. She watched in amazement as he deftly dodged the large black sword and tried to strike at his foe. Unfortunately the few blows he got through didnt seem to do much more than dent the creatures armor. A backhand to Ranmas jaw sent him back into the air to land a few feet away from her. Amelia was at his side almost instantly.

"Are you hurt Mr. Ranma?"

The martial artist regained his feet quickly. "Only my pride. What is that guy?"

"A Monster," answered Lina. "A creature from another plane of existence. He and others like him have incredible power that no human can hope to match with conventional attacks. Not even you."

Ranma made an unintelligible grunt and she knew he would probably attack again given half a chance. She decided not to give him that chance. Once again her attempt at a spell was disrupted though. This time by Serena.

"Moon Scepter Activation!" The blast from the girls wand shot forward, but the Monster simply raised its blade and the attack shattered on its darkness. "Yyou cant do that," she stammered in shock. Laughter was Dalgars only response.

Whatever power the girl had gained from her strange transformation, it wasnt enough to even slow the Monster. That meant that it was finally her turn to try. "Fireball!" Once again he simply raised his blade to block. This time however, the attack was reflected back at her. With a startled squawk, she threw herself out of the way of the burning sphere.

She closed her eyes as the explosion from the reflected attack sent rock and dirt flying in every direction. When she opened them again, Gourry was standing over her protectively. Slowly she got to her feet and began trying to locate the Monster. It wasnt hard since he hadnt moved from where he had been standing. He had every right to be confident, but this was pushing it.

"Youre up Gourry," she said to the swordsmans back. His only response was to move from a defensive position to one from which he could attack. The Sword of Light hummed softly in his hand.

"Are you going to try and match swords with me little human?" taunted Dalgar.

"Yep," answered Gourry completely missing the sarcasm in the question. He ran towards the Monster and attacked with an upward swing that was blocked by the dark sword. When the two blades connected, there was a thunderclap and lightning arced high into the air. The force of their meeting threw both fighters back.

"So," began Dalgar, "that is what happens when Sword of Night meets Sword of Light. I had expected something a little more grand."

Lina gaped at the Monster and his blade. Unlike the Sword of Light, there had been no eyewitness reports of its darker sibling. The only place it was mentioned regularly was in the manuscripts relating the war between Shabranigdo and the Water Dragon King. Then it had been wielded by one of the dark gods generals. To find it now in the hands of a Monster was both frightening and exciting.

Zelgadiss stepped up next to her as she watched Gourry once again engage the Monster. "If that sword is what he claims it to be than I believe a hasty retreat is in order."

"Whats the Sword of Night?" asked Amelia. Lina looked at her and saw that everyone except Gourry was standing close by watching the fight and waiting to hear her explanation.

"The Sword of Night is the opposing force of the Sword of Light. While the Sword of Light absorbs magic and uses it to enhance itself or the user, the Sword of Night reflects or destroys magic. Besides the fact that theyre both about equal in power, thats all I know."

Zelgadiss nodded in agreement of what she had said. "With such a powerful blade in the hands of a Monster we stand little chance of beating him without a plan."

"You dont intend to run away and leave the people of this town to this monster do you?" asked Serena indignantly.

"It doesnt care about the people here," stated Ranma. "It only wants me and Lina. You know, hes holding his own now, but hes beginning to get tired."

Lina realized that he was talking about Gourry and saw that he was right. "My Dragon Slave has a chance of stopping him, but we have to get away from here to use it. Zel, Amelia, the Rah Tilt might stand a chance too, so well use that to cover our retreat. If it doesnt work then Dalgar should follow us. When he does we need to find a way to keep him from blocking my attack."

"Leave that to me," said Ranma cracking his knuckles. "Im still not done with this guy yet."

"Fine, but make sure youre not near him when I launch my spell. Everybody ready?" They all nodded. "Good. Zel, Amelia, go! Gourry! Down the middle!"

Both sorcerers launched their most powerful spell, and Gourry threw himself to the side moments before they impacted on the Monster. Seconds later they were all running as fast as they could in the opposite direction. Glancing over her shoulder to see if the Rah Tilt had worked, Lina saw Dalgar striding after them.

"He shattered it," exclaimed a shocked Zel. "That sword of his shattered the most powerful spell white magic has to offer."

"Lets hope he cant do that with black magics most powerful spell." Looking over her shoulder again, Lina saw the Monster raise his sword high over head and bring it crashing down to the ground. The earth split before the blade and tremors spread out like shock waves, ripping the ground apart. "We have to go airborne," she shouted. "Levitation!" She grabbed Gourry and soared up into the air.

Lina had expected that someone would have to grab Serena and Ranma as well, but she was surprised to see them bounding through the treetops. To her amazement they were easily keeping pace with her flying, which was much faster than the average person could run. She wondered where they had obtained such speed and stamina.

"You think you can escape me so easily," bellowed the Monster. Suddenly lightning split the clear sky, and she and the others were forced to land in a small clearing. Ranma and Serena joined them there.

"This is far enough," she stated. "You guys keep him busy while I cast my spell. And remember Ranma, dont be anywhere near him when I cast it."

"Yeah, yeah. Ill be fine."

Before Lina could say anything else, several trees parted and Dalgar stepped into the clearing. "Decided to stand and fight eh? Better for you if you had continued running." The sword in his hands glowed with a dark light.

Ranma stepped forward looking cockier than ever. "I dont think we finished what we started."

Dalgar smiled revealing rows of sharp teeth. "Than let us finish it human."

"Right!" The martial artist charged and attacked head on. It amazed her that even knowing what he was facing Ranma showed no fear in his attack.

"You guys need to warn him when to move." The others nodded. With Ranma engaging toe to toe with big and ugly, there was no room for anyone else. "Darkness beyond twilight, crimson beyond blood that flows," she began. "Buried in the flow of time." Ranma moved between Dalgars strikes as if dancing. He did little attacking, content to simply dodge. "In thy great name I pledge myself to darkness." Ranma jumped over a sword swing and managed to get in a head strike. It didnt do much to faze the Monster. "All the fools who stand in our way shall be destroyed"

"Now Ranma!" shouted Zelgadiss. Ranma whirled in mid-air and kicked the elbow of Dalgars sword arm. The Monster roared in pain and his arm and blade fell limply to his side. Ranma turned to run, but Dalgar lashed out with his foot, tripping the martial artist.

"No!" screamed Serena. She launched herself forward to try and save him.

Lina was oblivious to all of this. "by the power you and I possess. Dragon Slave!" Even as she fired her spell she saw Serena rush to stand over Ranma. She tried to halt the attack, but it was too late. The blast shot towards its target at full speed.

Moments before the blast connected, she saw Dalgar move to try and put his blade between himself and the spell. He partially succeeded, but the attack still hit him. There was a massive explosion and she saw Serena throw her hands up before her even as the magic swept over the two people. The blast devastated the clearing and most of the surrounding area and when it was over an uneasy hush settled over the group.

"Ms. Serena? Mr. Ranma?" mumbled Amelia in a tear-choked voice.

Lina hung her head. "I told him to get out of the way."

"Look!" exclaimed Gourry, pointing to where the smoke from the explosion was slowly dissipating. Lina looked up and saw Serena standing over Ranma on an undamaged patch of ground surrounded by devastation. A crystal set in the brooch on her chest was glowing brilliantly and the billowing smoke marked the clear dome that surrounded the two.

"Theyre alive," exclaimed Amelia. Serena collapsed to one knee and everyone ran towards the two. "Are you okay?" asked a worried Amelia as she kneeled down next to a tired looking Serena.

"Ill be fine. It just took a lot of energy to maintain that shield."

"And exactly how did you generate said shield?" asked Lina kneeling down next to the strange pair.

Before she could get her answer, Ranma jumped to his feet and stomped over to look down on her. "What the hell was that thing?" he demanded.

Lina smiled. "That was my one shot, sure kill, Dragon Slave spell. Guaranteed to work every time."

"Yeah? Well, you almost got me killed! And you didnt get Dalgar with that blast either."

"What?" she exclaimed jumping to her feet. She searched the area for any sign of the Monster, but found none. "I dont see him. How do you know he survived?"

"Right before your spell hit I saw him slip through some hole in the air. I think you managed to hurt him before he got away though."

She and Zel exchanged glances. "Probably a warp spell of some type," muttered the chimera. "Very powerful."

"Anyway," she said turning back to Serena, "enough about big and ugly for the moment. Whats with this crystal doodad you have there?"

"The Imperium Silver Crystal is where I get my power. It also has powers of its own," she stated gesturing to the clear area her shield had protected.

There was a sparkle in Linas eye. "Is it really powerful?" The girl nodded and the sparkle got brighter. "Can I have it?"

Serena looked shocked. "No!"

"Why not? Didnt I just save your butt?"

"Yours too."

Before Lina could argue her point anymore, Amelia stepped between the two. "How can you ask her to give up her power source Ms. Lina. Its what she uses to defend love and justice with. And it gives her this really cool costume to fight in too."

"That reminds me," said Zel. "Whats with the costume and sudden power increase anyway?"

Serena sighed. "Where I come from Im a Sailor Scout, a defender of justice. There are only six of us and we fight to protect the Earth from the evils that threaten it. Im Sailor Moon. The others are Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Venus, and," she gestured to Ranma, "Sailor Sol."

Everyone looked from Ranma to the costume Serena was wearing and back again. Lina began to snicker. "You mean you" She couldnt continue and simply gestured at the skimpy outfit.

"Hey shut up! I do it only when Im a girl okay! Its not like I asked for it."

Amelia crossed her arms beneath her breasts and glared at Lina. "Well I think its very noble of Mr. Ranma to fight for justice as a Sailor Scout. You shouldnt be teasing him about it."

Lina just shook her head. These were strange people indeed. Looking around at the company she kept, she decided that maybe they werent so out of place here. "Forget about it. We have more important things to talk about. If Dalgar did survive than hes bound to come after us again. In that case our only real option is to find him first." Ranma nodded his agreement at her pronouncement, but the others stared at her as if she had gone crazy.

"You want to hunt a monster?" asked Zel in an amazed tone of voice. She nodded. "Why?"

"Because I dont enjoy being hunted. And because now he knows he cant go head to head with all of us, which means hell be using more cautious measures. Being attacked in my sleep doesnt really appeal to me."

"Okay then, how do you intend to find him? Its not like you can simply ask people where hes living."

Lina smiled. "Lord Koldan lives in the city of Haggen, about a months travel from here. If we find him than we find Dalgar. Guaranteed."

Zelgadiss finally relented with a sigh. "Fine, we go monster hunting. It wont be the first time I followed you into something stupid." Turning on his heel, he headed back to town.

Lina turned to Ranma and Serena. "What about you guys?"

Ranma put on a cocky grin. "I said Id help you deal with this guy didnt I. Besides, I still intend to beat that Monster guy senseless."

With Amelias help, a shaky Sailor Moon got to her feet. "At the moment Ive got nothing better to do so Ill go. Besides, youre our only chance to get home so we have to keep you safe."

She laughed. "I dont think theres any such thing as safe for this group." Three heads nodded in agreement. "Okay then, tomorrow we head to Haggen. But now its time for dinner!" This statement perked everyone up and the semi merry group headed back to town. Gourry, who had been asleep through the entire discussion, was left behind and didnt get back to town until late that night.

Ranma studied the town they were slowly approaching. Even bathed in the light of the setting sun it still looked like every other town they had passed through over the last month, only bigger. More of a city than a town he supposed. The city of Haggen. The city where Koldan was supposed to live.

He turned his attention away from the city to study the strange group he was traveling with. Lina and Gourry were rapidly moving away from the others, the promise of food pulling them towards the city like a magnet. It was obvious that Zelgadiss would have liked to join them, but his dignity kept him from dashing ahead like a child.

Amelia was walking next to Serena talking at the taller girl about something or another and apparently completely oblivious to the city ahead. Serena nodded appreciatively at whatever was being said, but her gaze, along with most of her attention, rested on the city. He knew that she too wanted to go charging into the city along with Gourry and Lina. Only politeness toward the girl next to her kept her from running off. His own stomach growled quietly, reminding him that a little food wouldnt go amiss right now.

The month long trip from Baicho to Haggen had started out fairly well. They had stocked the needed supplies, food mainly, and had started out the day after defeating Dalgar. Villages had been frequent for the first two and a half weeks of their journey and they had had many opportunities to refill their always rapidly depleting food supply. Somewhere along the way he had even found someone who could recreate the Chinese clothing he was so fond of. Needing new clothing herself, Serena now had something similar to what Amelia wore. She had foregone the cape though, and a small golden crescent adorned her left breast with its larger twin decorating her back. Those had been Amelias idea.

Every evening when they would stop for the night, Ranma would teach martial arts to whoever wanted to learn. Serena and Amelia were there every night and he had managed to get both to the point where they could kick without falling down. Some muscle was even beginning to show on their thin frames. Lina joined them frequently and he was amazed at how quickly she had taken to the art. She had a temper that rivaled Akanes though, and small impact craters marked many of the places they had stopped for the night.

Except for the bouts between him and Lina, the trip had been uneventful. He had remarked on how strange it was that Dalgar hadnt made a repeat appearance and Lina had told him that was either because he couldnt find them or because he knew they were going where he wanted them to and was waiting for them. He was personally hoping for the first reason.

The cause of the hunger running rampant through the group was the fact that they hadnt seen a village or town in the last week and a half. This meant that they had to forage for their food. Ranma was fairly good at this and Zel and Lina had some experience, but when the group you were trying to feed ate enough for twenty people you had problems. Problems with several hungry people who were all fairly powerful and desperate for food. Not a good mix.

Luckily that was all at an end. "Cmon, lets hurry," he said to the three people still within hearing range. "If we dont than those two will have eaten everything in the city before we get there."

The idea of not getting any food spurred everyone into a dead run and they caught Lina and Gourry at the gates to the city. "You could have waited for the rest of us you know," whined Serena.

Lina snorted. "First come first serve and I intend to be first." She darted into the city and everyone followed close on her heels.

They all made a beeline for the first eating establishment they saw. Unfortunately, five people trying to go through a door meant for one didnt work to well. They were forced to make the doorway bigger.

"What have you done!?" demanded the angry proprietor as he stared in shock at the large, jagged hole in the front of his building.

"Here," said Lina thrusting a bag of gold into the mans hands. "Bring us six helpings of everything on your menu and make it fast. If you dont than I will be forced to further remodel your restaurant."

The man opened the bag thrust on him and his frown became a smile. "Of course, of course. Ill get my cooks on it right away." He hurried off and they found a table to wait at.

Everyone was too hungry to bother with talk so they waited with silent impatience for the food to come. A passing waitress carrying a pitcher of water tripped over something and spilled the contents of the pitcher over Ranmas head. There were shocked gasps from the people who saw his transformation, but no one at the able even batted an eye. His unwanted ability to attract water like a magnet had given everyone plenty of chances to see him change on the trip.

The waitress was too startled by what she had seen to do more than stammer a quick apology. Picking up the pitcher hurriedly, she headed for the kitchen at something close to a dead run. Ranma-chan paid about as much attention to the waitress as she did to the water dripping off of her hair, which was to say very little. A few minutes later the food arrived on several large, steaming platters. A few minutes after that it was gone and there were sighs around the table as everyone slumped contentedly in their chairs.

"Ah, that hit the spot," said Lina. "Now its time for bed."

"What about Koldan?" asked Zel.

"Hell still be here in the morning. Well deal with him then." Lina slid out of her chair and headed for the door, and Ranma-chan got up to follow her out along with the others. It was dark when they exited the restaurant so they found the nearest inn and everyone headed to their rooms with little talk.

Ranma-chan wasnt ready to crash yet so she began practicing kata in the small area of the room that was free of obstruction. Even though it was night the moon provided plenty of light so she didnt bother to light any candles. She could hear Linas snoring coming through the wall, but she had put up with it during the entire journey and it had become easy for her to simply ignore it.

She was just finishing her last form when she noticed that Linas snoring had stopped. So intent on ignoring it had she been that she hadnt noticed when the horrendous noise had quit. Glancing outside she realized it was very late and wondered what the sorceress was doing up at this hour. She was about to go investigate when she heard the soft clicking sound of her door opening.

The rational part of her mind told her it was Lina coming to talk to her. Her instincts told her something was wrong and she should hide. Always being one to ignore rational thought, she hid. Flattening herself up against the wall next to the door where it would be hard for someone to see her in the dark, she waited. The door swung silently inward and a dark figure that was much bigger than Lina stepped quietly into the room. Ranma-chan easily recognized the dark shape as Dalgar in his human guise. Anger welled up inside of her, but she forced herself to remain hidden for the moment.

Dalgar still wasnt fully in the room when he raised one hand and gestured towards the bed. The sheets on the bed began to writhe around, apparently trying to tie up whoever was supposed to be sleeping there. The surprise the Monster felt when they simply entangled one another was obvious in the way he stood. From where she stood on his right side Ranma smiled.

Her first blow was a punch to the side of his face. The second was a kick to the back of his knee and the third was a round kick to his ribs that she was sure he felt even through his armor. With a surprised grunt, Dalgar flew back out her doorway and through the door of the room across the hall. Through the large opening made by the Monsters body she could see Zel on his bed trying in vain to break the bonds that held him.

Ranma-chan decided to help. She leaped through the hole in the wall and brought both feet down squarely on Dalgars face. Leaving the stunned Monster lying on the ground groaning, she hurried to where Zel was tied up. Using both hands to tear at the sheets, she began to rip them off of the chimeras body. She almost had the ones tying up his arms when a large hand clamped down on the back of her neck. "Uh oh."

She wasnt completely sure what happened next, but when she regained her senses she realized she was lying face down in the street. Bits of glass and broken wood littered the ground around her. Looking up she saw a Ranma shaped hole in what had been the outside wall of her room. Even as she noted this, the monstrous form of Dalgar flew out of the room, destroying what was left of the wall. She rolled quickly out of the way as his feet smashed into the ground where she had been laying.

Leaping to her feet she prepared to defend herself against an opponent she had already faced twice before. "What kind of coward attacks his opponents when theyre asleep," she taunted.

Dalgar laughed. "You judge me by human standards. Monsters have no care for such stupid things as honor. Getting the job done is all that matters." He drew his black sword from where it was sheathed on his back. In the darkness of night his eyes seemed like two bonfires burning brightly, but they gave off no light. "I believe this will be our last fight girl. I have already incapacitated your friends and now you are all that remain. You will have no help this time."

Ranma-chan ground her teeth in frustration. What he said could very well be true from what she had seen of Zel. As much as she hated to admit it even to herself she knew from her last two fights with Dalgar that she was no match for him alone. Since she would probably receive no help and she couldnt defeat him as things stood that left only one option. Mentally she reached for what she needed and the henshin wand appeared in her hand.

"What is that," demanded Dalgar. "Perhaps you have new weapon to try against me?"

She smiled. "Not exactly." She raised the wand above her head and Dalgar took a defensive position with his sword held out before him. "Sol Star Power!" The words were easier to say than they had been in the past and the light of her transformation consumed her. Serena had told her of the problem she had had transforming and so Ranma-chan had made a point to break the dimensional barrier at the start of their journey. When it was over, Dalgar was watching her warily.

"What is this? You dress as that other one does now. I have never seen magic like this before."

"Thats because youve never been to Earth. Ill be more than happy to show you how our magic works though."

"Ha, no matter what kind of magic you use I will still defeat you. You dont stand a chance against me."

"Well see." Dalgar charged suddenly, bringing his sword down over his head. She sidestepped and planted a knee firmly in his chest. The strength of the blow was enough to send the Monster into the air. He managed to land on his feet though, and his sword whistled through the air as it sought Sols head. All it found was air as she nimbly jumped over the arcing blade. The mid-air kick she delivered to his face sent Dalgar stumbling backwards.

Dalgars eyes flared with rage. "How can you be so strong all of a sudden? Where did you get such strength and speed?"

"The Sun grants me its power so that I can fight things like you. You who taint this world with your evil. You who seek only power for yourselves and misery for others. You who would consume this world with your greed. I will not stand for it. In the name of the Sun I will defeat you." That whole speech sounded a little stupid to her ears, but Sailor Sol didnt care. All that mattered right now was getting rid of Dalgar so she could make sure her friends were all right.

"You will find that the dark forces are not defeated so easily. Not even by one of your caliber." The dark blade swung again, and again she dodged and struck. She stayed in close this time and continued to work his body while he tried desperately to strike at her.

Finally leaping away she raised one hand over her head. "Solar" she began and a chain of fire appeared at her feet and began to move up her body, encircling her on its way. It reached her upraised hand and flared brilliantly. She brought her flame engulfed hand down across her body and then swept it out and up. "Flare!" The flames shot forward like a flame-thrower to engulf Dalgar.

The Monster managed to raise the Sword of Night in order to block the attack, but only partially. Some of the flames whipped around the blade to strike him in the face and body. He screamed as he fell backwards trying to keep hold of his blade while clutching his injuries at the same time. He went to one knee, digging the tip of his sword into the ground to support himself, and Sailor Sol prepared for the finishing blow.

The blast of white energy that slammed into her chest knocked the wind from her lungs and caused black specks to dance across her vision. When her vision cleared and she could breath again, Sol tried to pick herself up off of the ground. Her muscles felt watery and she felt as if she had no energy, making such a simple task difficult. She managed to make it to a kneeling position and began surveying the area in an attempt to figure out what had happened. It wasnt hard.

Standing next to Dalgar, looking down at the injured Monster was a man dressed in purple robes trimmed in gold. A circlet of gold was set upon his brow and his long white hair was tied back with a black cord. Cold blue eyes looked out of a face that was weathered from exposure to the sun and lined with age. His lips were pursed as if he was trying to solve a puzzle.

"The amount of energy I felt down here led me to believe that you must be battling the great Lina Inverse. Instead I find you fighting a strange girl dressed in stranger clothing, and losing. You disappoint me Dalgar."

The Monster seemed to hang his head in shame at the rebuke. He was cloaked in shadow, but it was obvious that he was grievously hurt. "She is the boy I told you about. The shape-changer who travels with Lina."

"Is that so?" The man turned to study her for a moment. "Well, I must say that I am impressed with you girl, or whatever you are. Most people would have been struck unconscious for days after being hit with my energy dispersion spell."

"You must be Koldan." The man made a half bow, confirming Sols statement. "What did you do to me?"

"Do to you? Not much. As the name of the spell implies, I simply dispersed your energy and strength. You will be fine after a few days rest." A dark smile crossed Koldans face. "Unfortunately for you, you will not have those days to recover." He raised one hand and it began to glow with a soft purple light. Sol forced herself to stand and Koldans smile became amused. "Do you intend to try and fight? I doubt you have the strength to even walk, let alone challenge me."

"I will not die on my knees." She tried in vain to find some pocket of energy to defend herself with, but it was obvious that Koldans spell had worked all to well. All of her strength had been sapped just as if she had used her Super Nova technique. She could hardly even find the strength to talk.

Koldan laughed. "Do not worry about dying. I have no intention of killing you."

This statement startled her for a moment. "Youd better kill me because if you dont then Ill pound you into the ground."

"Oh, I have no doubt that you will try. It will be a futile effort however. You see I sought to bring Lina Inverse here so that I could drain away her energy and use it for myself. I expected her and her friends to come, but I did not expect you. You have far more energy than she, and I will drain all of it away and leave you a shadow of what you are. Then I shall take the energy of your friends and become so powerful that no one will be able to stand against me."

As Koldan talked, the energy he was gathering in his hand was growing more and more intense. Sol knew that soon he would be ready to take her energy and there wasnt a damn thing she could do about it. The fact that no one had come to investigate the noise they were making meant that all of her friends were tied up in the inn. There would be no one to help her. Despair began to flood through her even as the purple energy began to pulse. She pushed it down and forced herself to find a way out.

Pushing Koldan and purple energy from her mind, she concentrated on gathering what strength she could. Reaching deep down inside of herself to the stubbornness that made up her very core, she found what she was looking for. It was only enough for one strike though, so it would have to be perfect. Hoping Dalgar wouldnt get in the way, she prepared to launch herself at Koldan with the hopes of giving her friends some time to escape.

"Its time." The purple energy in Koldans hand had become almost black and was pulsing rapidly. With a wordless shout he fired it as a thin beam of purple light. Using the small amount of strength she had collected, Sol dodged the attack and threw herself at the robed man with all of her remaining strength. Inches from her target she slammed into an invisible barrier that sent a jolt of electricity racing through her body. She was flung backwards with a cry of pain.

Staring up at the clear night sky, Sol could here Koldan laughing. She didnt have enough strength left to even turn her head, but out of the corner of her eye she saw the purple energy began to gather again. Suddenly there was a familiar voice shouting something she couldnt quite make out. That last jolt had left all of her senses addled and she could neither see nor hear clearly.

A second voice joined in with the first and she tried desperately to decipher what was being said. She couldnt, but she realized who was talking, Lina and Serena. Help had come after all. A voice she recognized as Koldans began speaking and there was a flash of purple light, a shout and then a scream. Purple suddenly became pure white and the light washed over her with a roar. There was pain beyond anything she had ever imagined, worse even then when they had fought Dolgoth. It was too much. She blacked out.

Zelgadiss worked at the sheets that bound him, and ever so slowly they yielded to his constant pressure. Ranma had managed to loosen them when she came to his aid, but Dalgar had sent her flying before she could finish the job. Luckily the Monster had paid little attention to the fact that some of his bindings had been broken.

With a loud snap the final strand of bedding broke. Quickly unraveling what was left, Zel grabbed his sword from where it was leaning in the corner and headed out of the room. Looking across the hall to the hole Ranma had flew out of, he considered whether to help her or free the others. Hed seen the martial artist hold her own against Dalgar before, so he decided to help the others first.

As he headed down the hallway a bright orange flash from outside caught his eye, but he ignored it. He didnt bother to try the first door he came to; he simply kicked it open. Inside he found Serena tied up on her bed in much the same way as he had been. "Hold still," he told the squirming girl as he raised his sword over his head. She froze like a terrified rabbit and he brought his blade down, slicing her bonds.

"You could have killed me," shouted Serena as she yanked what was left of the sheets off of herself.

"But I didnt. Ranma is outside fighting Dalgar. Go help while I free the others." Without waiting for a response, he turned and left the room. He heard grumbling from behind him, but even as he was kicking in the door across the hall he saw the flashes of light that signaled the girls transformation.

Inside the second room he found Lina. "Hold still," he ordered. Unlike Serena, Lina continued to squirm around on her bed. Sighing in frustration, he swung his sword as carefully as he could, but he still felt it nick her arm.

"OWWW," bellowed Lina as her severed bonds fell off of her. There was a trickle of blood running down her arm. "What the hell were you thinking?!"

"I told you to be still. Maybe youll listen next time." Ignoring the sorceresss furious glare he turned to go. "Ranmas outside fighting Dalgar and Serenas on her way to help. You go too while I get Amelia and Gourry."

"Your lucky Im madder at that stupid Monster than at you. When this is over Im gonna make you pay for this though." Zel was ignoring her as he exited the room.

The next room was Amelias and she listened when he told her to sit still. "Whats going on Mr. Zelgadiss?"

"Ranma, Serena, and Lina are fighting Dalgar. Come with me while I get Gourry and then well help too." Striding across the hall he kicked down Gourrys door and found him already reaching for his sword. The tattered remnants of his bonds were lying on the floor and there was a feral light in his eyes.

"If hes hurt Lina" he growled.

"Shes fine," assured Zel. "Shes outside fighting even as we speak. We need to get out there and help." Gourry was cutting a hole in the wall before he had finished speaking. The swordsman leapt through and he followed pulling Amelia along with him. Hitting the ground, he studied a scene he could make little sense of.

Lying on the ground in the middle of the street was a girl dressed similar to Sailor Moon. He assumed that was Ranma as a Sailor Scout. Standing a few feet away from the fallen girl was Sailor Moon with scepter in hand. Between those two and a man dressed all in purple was a very angry looking Lina. The mans hand was glowing purple with unreleased magic and at his feet was a very wounded looking Dalgar.

It was obvious that words had been exchanged and something big was going down, but he couldnt tell what. Gourry moved towards Lina, but before he could take three steps, the man released his magic with a shout. The purple beam shot straight for Lina and she raised her up hands before her. "Barrier!" she shouted.

A nearly invisible shield appeared before Lina, but the beam hit before it was complete and was simply deflected instead of stopped. This would have worked fine except for the fact that it was now heading straight for Sailor Moon. The beam moved too fast and she had no time to react. It struck her directly between her breasts, right where she kept her magic crystal. She screamed and the light turned from purple to bright white and began expanding outward like a raging tornado, engulfing the warrior of justice in seconds.

"Whats going on," demanded Gourry as he raised his hands to shield himself from the light and the wind that was beginning to whip around the area.

Zel only stared mutely at the tornado of light. Next to him Amelia was doing much the same. There was a feeling in the air, a feeling all magic users feared. Every apprentice was given a first hand demonstration of this feeling with a carefully controlled experiment. This was so that they would know exactly what it was when they felt it and know to get as far away from the source as possible. It was the feeling a magic user got when two forms of magic were mixed.

It was obvious that Lina knew what was going on too, but before she could try and get away a strand of light shot out and grabbed her. She was pulled screaming into the rapidly expanding tornado. Of Serena and Ranma there was no sign. "Gourry get back here fast," he shouted even as he grabbed the warrior by his armor. Pulling him back behind himself, he turned to Amelia. "We need to set up a shield! Quickly before it can get to us!"

The girl nodded and raised her hands up before her. Zel did the same and a clear globe of magic surrounded the three of them. Glancing around outside of the small bubble he found the man in purple opening a portal through which to escape. Both he and Dalgar quickly stepped into it, but before it could close behind them a strand of light shot through the opening. He thought he heard them scream, but he ignored them and turned back to study the whirling mass of magic.

"Whats going on!?" demanded Gourry. "What happened to Lina and the others!?"

"I dont know," answered Zel. "That tornado was caused by the mixing of two different forms of magic. When that happens anything and everything can happen. Its an extremely dangerous situation. Look for yourself."

The tornado had stopped expanding, but wild strands of magic were shooting off in every direction. Wherever they struck strange things happened. One struck the front of a store and it became a motley of colors. Another struck a rain barrel and it got up and ran down the street. A building down the street suddenly erupted in a ball of green fire. A curious man poking his head out of a window was turned inside out by a stray blast. He fell screaming from the window, dead before he hit the ground.

One of the blasts connected with the shield and it was all he and Amelia could do to keep it in place. Gourry was beating on the inside of the bubble, trying to get out. "We have to help them! We cant let them die!"

"Its too late to help them, but theres no guarantee theyll be dead. I just pray that whatever happens to them wont be worse than death." Gourry began beating on the shield even harder.

The storm of magic finally began to dissipate and after about six minutes it had completely disappeared leaving chaos in its wake. There was a very small jungle, complete with monkeys, where it had been centered. He breathed a sigh of relief when he saw all four of his friends hanging in a large tree apparently unhurt. Then his breath caught. Four?

"Um Mr. Zelgadiss, somethings not right."

"Tell me about it," muttered Zel as he moved closer to his friends wondering what kind of surprises were waiting for him.

Part 2, Chapter 4

Three figures floated in a void of inky blackness. Warrior, sorceress, and princess. They spun in a slow circle, arms extended out slightly, feet together, and eyes shut. Each was oblivious to the fact that they were here. Not because they were unaware, but because time did not flow here. They had not had the chance to become aware.

A single figure appeared in the center of the three. It wasnt as if he had simply appeared there, but more like he had always been there and no one had taken any notice of him until now. He was an old man, bent with age and dressed in tattered gray robes. His unkempt gray bead flowed down to his feet and in one hand he held a staff topped with a clock. The clock continued to function even though it should have been impossible for time to pass here.

"Listen," intoned the old man in a voice belonging to a young man. "You will remember none of what happens here when you awake, but listen anyway because some day you may and you should have an explanation for what is about to be done." The three figures continued their slow orbit; none giving any sign that they were even alive.

"I am Chronos, god of time and space. I have foreseen the future and know what is to come, what is supposed to come. Fate has brought you to me and so now I act with the knowledge that what is done here will help to save a universe. I doubt you will enjoy much of what is about to occur, but you will live and you will fight on."

The god turned to a girl with long blonde hair. He raised his staff above his head and a small crystal rose from the girls chest to float high above her head. "Princess you have ever been and princess will you ever be, but Scout you are no longer." Chronos brought his staff down and the crystal split down the middle to form two identical pieces. One of those pieces came to rest on the girls forehead while the other remained floating in the air.

He turned to a girl with long red hair. "Sorceress, your powers are great, but when the fate of a universe rests on your actions you will find that they are not enough. I grant you the strength needed although not in the way you would like." The remaining crystal half flew from where it floated and attached itself to the second girls forehead. There it shown brightly, resonating with its twin across the way.

"For you to gain such power, another has lost. The balance must be maintained. Knowledge can be shared so knowledge shall you give." The god raised his staff again and red light seemed to gather over the red head. When a small glowing ball had been formed he waved his staff and it flew over to the blonde. Chronos lowered his staff and the light settled into the girls head. "You two are linked now. Two halves of the same moon."

He turned to a boy with black hair. "Half and half you have ever been and half and half shall you always remain. But now those halves shall become two." He pointed his staff at the boy and a line of blue light appeared running down his center. It glowed faintly at first and then flared up brightly. There it remained, separating the boy into two symmetrical halves.

"What had needed to be done has been done. Now it is time for you to return to your world." He spun his staff above his head and the darkness that surrounded them reached out to engulf the three people. In seconds only the god was left standing in the void, and then he too was gone.

Serena walked through a maze of mirrors. She had no idea where she was or where she was going. It was all so confusing and every time she tried to think on it, her head began to hurt. She rubbed at her forehead now and felt a small lump there. Frowning, she stopped in front of one of the mirrors and studied her reflection.

Where the bump on her head should have been, there was, instead, a small white glow. She touched it hesitantly and was shocked when her fingers slipped into the glow to strike something solid underneath. Images of brain sucking aliens came to her mind and she stumbled back from the mirror with a startled cry. Her back bumped into something and she jumped and spun to come down facing her imagined attacker.

The attacker, it turned out, was herself or rather, her reflection. Letting out a long breath, she once again began studying her forehead. Suddenly the image before her began to change until she was looking at a much younger version of herself. Her child self seemed to study her for a moment and then she turned and ran off. The mirror followed her.

Serena watched in amazement as the little girl ran up a grass-covered hill. She tripped over a hidden root and fell to the ground, skinning her knee in the process. Tears sprang to her eyes as she sat down and nursed her injured knee. All of a sudden, someone was next to the girl comforting her. Then another person appeared and Serena realized she was seeing her parents. Tears stung her own eyes and she reached to touch them. The mirror rippled like water under her touch.

Quickly she snatched her hand back and the mirror calmed. Now she saw herself standing before Metallia. She was garbed as the Moon Princess and her dead friends lay on the ground around her. Her crescent wand came up as she pulled on the power of the Silver Imperium Crystal in order to defeat the one who had brought so much misery to her world. The image shifted again, this time without her touch.

A young girl she didnt recognize stood stiffly in front of a small house. She had long red hair and her eyes watered with unshed tears. The girl reached over to gingerly touch her elbow; jaw set in silent refusal to cry over the small injury. A hand came to rest on her head and she looked up into a mans smiling face. The man said something and handed her a pastry. Beaming, the girl began to rapidly devour the pastry, her injury forgotten.

The image shifted again. Now she saw Lina holding the sword of light before her as she faced a huge creature that could have only come from someones nightmares. Gourry and Zel lay on the ground, still alive but seriously hurt. Lina began to chant something unheard and darkness began to surround her. The pure glow of the sword was engulfed in blackness beyond dark and she raised it over her head with the intent of striking the monster before her. Even as she swung the image shattered.

The Lina she knew stood before her in the mirror. Serena regarded the image, waiting for something to happen. The reflection simply regarded her in turn. Hesitantly, she extended a hand toward the mirror. To her surprise, the figure before her emulated the gesture. Maybe it was simply a warped reflection.

Her hand touched something solid and she gasped. It wasnt the cold hardness of mirror she touched, but the rough, leathery texture of a glove. Lina looked equally surprised. The two stared at each other in stunned silence for a moment. Finally Serena broke the quiet stillness. "Lina?"

The sorceress nodded. "Where are we?"

Serena studied the maze around her. "I dont know. A dream I think."

Lina snorted. "Ive heard of people having the same dream, but not meeting in it. How do you explain this encounter if were in a dream?"

"I dont know. It just feels like a dream. Like I should know this place." Once again she looked around the maze. This time images flashed across the mirrors. They were too fast for her to get a good look at though. "I cant remember ever being in a maze like this before."

"Neither can I. Its funny, but when I first woke up here I thought I was inside of a giant crystal. The walls look like mirrors, but they resemble the faucets of a gem as well. Suppose I just have money on the brain though."

Serena nodded absently, still trying to view the pictures flashing through the maze. Something in Linas words tugged at her mind, but she couldnt seem to concentrate on anything. "Do you know how we got here?"

"No. The last thing I remember isis" There was a pause and she turned back to Lina. The sorceresss brow was knit in concentration and she had one hand held to her forehead. "I dont know. All I can remember is a bright flash of light and then the feeling of intense fear and pain. My head is starting to ache."

That fit with what she had discovered when she had tried to remember. "Can you see the images in the walls?"
Lina nodded. "One of you, one of me. From my past."

Something made Serena look to the headband wrapped around Linas forehead. "Take your headband off."

"Huh? Why?"

"I want to see something." Lina shrugged and undid the piece of black cloth she wore. When it came away Serena could see a soft white glow emanating from an unknown source. "You have a glowing forehead too."

Lina looked to Serenas forehead and then reached up to touch her own. "What is it?"

"I dont know. It seems as if I should though. None of this makes any sense." Suddenly the glow on Linas forehead began to intensify. She could feel her own forehead began to grow warm. "Whats going on?"

"II dont know."

The glow became so bright that it hurt to look at it. Suddenly all of the mirrors silently shattered, sending waves of glass shards everywhere. Serena tried to protect her face from the broken glass, but she couldnt move. She closed her eyes and suddenly her mind was filled with a thousand images. More than a thousand. An entire lifetimes worth.

She saw Lina, was Lina. The sorceresss entire life spread out before her. All of her hopes, her dreams, everything. It was too much. She screamed as pain racked her brain. Darkness consumed all, and then there was the pure light of the sun.

Ranma watched the couple walking along the forest path in confusion. He had no idea where he was or how he had gotten here. To top it off, he appeared to be nothing more than a floating apparition without any physical form. He simply glided behind these two as if pulled by an invisible rope. Having nothing better to do, he studied the pair.

When he actually took the time to look closely, he realized he recognized both of them. The man was himself, almost. His hair was longer and tied in a loose ponytail rather than a pigtail. He wore blue armor adorned with silver dragons and a large sword hung at his side. The hard lines that made up his face seemed to soften as he smiled down at the girl walking by his side.

The girl was also himself. Or more specifically, the female side that had so often looked back from a mirror, Riana. This was the first time he had seen her as herself rather than a Sailor Scout. She looked much like his girl form, but there were a few differences. A small scar puckered her cheek and her eyes had a harder, more serious set to them. There were other, even smaller differences, but you wouldnt notice them if you werent looking for them. In her hands was a bouquet of flowers.

The Dragon and Sailor Sol before their death, he mused. Wonder how I got here.

I remember this day. The thought was not his own even though it seemed to come from his head. He still found himself trying to swing his head around to search for someone. Being without a head or even a reasonable facsimile made this an impossible task.

Whos there? he demanded. There was no reply and after a few moments he put the voice down as some trick of the dream he was currently having. He assumed it was a dream since nothing else could possibly make any sense.

He turned back to the two people striding along the forest path and a thought suddenly struck him. His girl form was almost identical to Riana leading him to believe that it was she who had drowned in the Jusenkyo spring. But he had seen her die on the Moon. How was it that his female half could look so much like her? At that moment the couple rounded a corner and his disembodied gaze was thrown out across a valley he knew all too well. A valley filled with springs.

Such a sad place, intoned the voice in his mind. So many died here. She died here.

Ranma ignored the voice this time, choosing to concentrate on what was before him. He watched as Riana and the Dragon slowly made their way down the rocky path leading to the springs. Why anyone would want to visit this place was a mystery to him. The two talked to one another as they went, but he was too far away to make out their words.

As they neared the springs, Ranma began to drift towards them. By the time he was close enough to hear them though, they had stopped talking. They walked along in silence and it seemed to him that their moods were subdued, as if whatever they had come to do hung heavily on their hearts. Finally they came to a stop before one spring and stood looking down into its clear depths.

Ranma looked around the area, got his bearings, and came to the sudden realization of exactly where they were. This is the spring I fell into. The spring of drowned girl.

This is the spring in which she drowned. The voice was back once again.

Go away.

You go away. This is my dream.

That was the first time the voice had responded to him and it took him completely by surprise. If he had had a mouth it would have been hanging wide open. He had no time to think on the strange event though, because the couple was talking again and he wanted to hear what they were saying.

The man was asking something. "where she drowned?"

Riana nodded. "Yes. My sister fell in battle and drowned in this pool one year ago this day." She knelt down and placed the flowers before the pool. Tears began to well up in her eyes.

The Dragon placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Shara was a good person and a fine warrior. Her memory will live as long as the Silver Millennium." Ranma winced inwardly at that statement.

"Thank you, Ryu. Your words mean much to me."

The two stood by the pool in silence for a long time. Finally Riana stood and, hand in hand, they began to make the return trip to wherever it was they had come from. Ranma watched them go from where he remained floating by the spring, whatever connection that had bound him to them now broken.

Why do I dream about this day? It was the voice again. It was a sad day for me.

This isnt your dream stupid. Its mine.

Who are you? A demon from my past come to haunt my dreams? Be gone before I find a priestess to send you back to the hell from which you were spawned.

Ranma snorted. Maybe youre the demon invading peoples dreams. Did you ever think of that?

May the Sun burn your dark soul to ash!

I am the Sun! Suddenly he was flying up and away from Jusenkyo. Like a kite without a string he drifted among the clouds for what seemed like an eternity. The voice was gone though, something he was thankful for. He was beginning to wonder if he would ever wake from this dream when his eyes opened to the sunlight streaming down into his face.

Zelgadiss sat on a large boulder and stared out across the lake upon whose bank they were camped. Behind him, he could hear the sounds of Amelia and Gourry taking care of the others. It had been three days since they had been forced to flee Haggen with their injured companions. The people living there had not been happy with them after the tornado of wild magic had ripped an entire section of their city apart. Zel didnt blame them.

Luckily for him and his companions, none of their friends had sustained any physical injuries. The fact that they had been unconscious for the last three days meant that something was wrong on the inside though. That and certain physical changes in all of them made for problems he really didnt want to consider. At the moment they were on their way to a temple he knew of. It was about another two days away and the clerics there would be willing to help.

Zel sighed wearily and jumped off of his perch. He was more than a little worried for his friends, even though he wouldnt admit it to the others. For all he knew they could all be stark raving mad when they woke up. He was about to go back to camp and prepare for the days journey when a shout from that direction whipped his head around.

"Fireball!" The boulder he had been sitting on suddenly erupted in a fiery explosion. Zel hit the ground as large rock fragments bounced off of his back doing little damage thanks to his tough hide. When the last pieces of boulder had flown over his head, he jumped to his feet and drew his sword. Whoever had attacked him was in for a nasty surprise.

He dashed around the remains of the boulder and stopped to stare at the spectacle before him. Serena was sitting wide-eyed on the ground with one hand extended before her. Amelia, Gourry, and Lina were all staring at Serena with shock written plainly on their faces. The crystal embedded in the girls forehead was glowing with a faint red color. The twin to that crystal was attached to Linas forehead and it too was glowing faintly. There was no sign of his attacker.

The crystals had been in their foreheads when he had pulled them from the tree they had been hanging in. No amount of prying had been able to dislodge the stones and he had been loath to try more direct methods. At the time they hadnt seemed to pose any danger so they had left them alone. Now he wondered if that had been wise.

"What happened?" he asked indicating the shattered boulder. No one answered his question; all of them looking stunned speechless. He moved closer to the small group and repeated his question.

Amelia shook her head as if coming out of a daze. "SSerena just sat up suddenly and threw her hand out. She shouted fireball and, well, thats what happened."

Zelgadiss studied Serena for a few moments. "How did you cast a fireball spell?"

"II dont know! It just sort of happened. I cant even remember doing it." Serena looked flustered as she stared at the remains of the boulder and then suddenly she turned to regard Lina. If it was at all possible, Zel would have sworn that her eyes got bigger.

The two girls sat staring at one another and then finally Lina shook her head and looked around. "What happened?" she asked quietly. It was obvious she wasnt talking about the fireball.

Zel squatted down next to the pair. "You were caught in a tornado of wild magic. Luckily you both appear to be unharmed. Unless of course the crystals embedded in both your foreheads are dangerous."

Both girls looked at each other and then turned back to him. "No," they answered in unison.

"How do you know? Do you even know what the crystals are?"

Once again they looked at each other before answering. Finally Serena fumbled with her brooch. Taking it from where she had it clipped on her shirt, she opened it up. The inside was empty. "We were right. It is the"

"Silver Imperium Crystal," finished Lina. "We thought so."

The two went back to staring at one another as they fingered the crystals protruding from their heads. Gourry put a hand on Linas shoulder and she looked up. "Are you sure youre okay?"

The sorceress nodded. "Fine. What about"

"Ranma?" Serena swung her head around to look for him.

Zelgadiss stood up. "HeSheThey appear to be fine. Sort of."

"What do you mean" began Lina.

"they and sort of?" This whole sentence thing was starting to get on his nerves, but there were more important things to think about at the moment.

He pointed to their left and they both turned to look. Lying on a blanket in the sun was Ranma snoring loudly. The girls studied him for a moment and then turned back to Zel with questioning looks on their faces. He gestured off to his right and once again they both turned to look. Lying on a blanket in the sun was Ranmas female half. Both girls gasped in shock.

"We felt that they should be kept apart from one another," said Amelia. "That way when they wake up they wont have the shock of seeing themselves separated. Actually we have no idea whats going to happen when they wake up. If they wake up."

As if on cue, the male Ranma groaned and sat up slowly. He rubbed at his eyes for a moment and then looked around. "What happened?" he asked groggily. He saw everyone staring at him and stared back defiantly. "What?"

As one, all heads turned to regard his female half. She was just beginning to sit up and take note of her situation. Her reaction was slightly different when she caught sight of everyone staring at her. She jumped to her feet and assumed a fighting stance. "Where am I?" she demanded. Everyone looked at one another and turned once again to the male Ranma.

"What the hell is up with you guys?" Their bodies blocked his other half from view, leaving him ignorant of his current situation. "Did all of you hit your heads on something while I was asleep?" Ignoring the martial artists question, five heads swiveled away once again.

"Ill ask one more time. Where am I and how did I get here?"

Zel decided it was time to resolve the situation. "Dont you remember who we are Ranma?"

"Hey! Im behind you rock for brains." Zel ignored the insult and continued to watch the female Ranma.

"My name is not Ranma. Now answer my question before I have to hurt you."

Everyone went back to exchanging glances. The male Ranma came stomping over to the group glaring menacingly at Zelgadiss. "What is wrong with you?" he demanded. Zel pointed and Ranma gasped. He stared at his female half for a few moments and then shook his head. "A dream. Im obviously still asleep. Wake me when I wake up." He turned to return to his blanket.

For her part, his female half stared at him with wide eyes. "Ryu?" she asked hesitantly. Ranma stopped and turned around slowly. The eyes of his counterpart widened in surprise and delight. "It is you Ryu!"

Ranma had a very sick look on his face. "This isnt a dream is it?" Everyone shook their head and he sighed. "This should prove interesting."

Serena stood up from where she had been sitting on the ground and Lina followed suit moments later. In relation to the female Ranma, Serena had been partially obscured by the sorceress. As she came into full view, the pigtailed girls eyes got even wider and she went to one knee. "Princess," she exclaimed.

Serena and Lina shared another one of those looks. "Why do you call this man Ryu and why do you address me as princess."

The girl seemed confused for a moment. "Are you not princess Serena and is he not the Dragon?"

Male Ranma was suddenly pushing his way through the group to stand facing his other half. "You! You were that voice in my dream. In the one about Jusenkyo andand" His voice trailed off and he suddenly looked like he was going to be ill. "This isnt happening."

"Do you know"

"whats going on?"

Zel glared at the two girls, but Ranma began talking before he could ask them to stop it with the shared sentence thing. "I think so. I dont know how or why, but I think so. Youre Riana arent you?"

His female half nodded. "Of course. Who else would I be?"

Ranma groaned and covered his face with his hands. Then he had a sudden mood change and began looking around excitedly. He spied a bucket full of water that was going to be used to put out the campfire and a grin split his face. "If shes me than maybe I dont have to be a girl anymore." He rushed over, picked up the bucket, and dumped it over his head. The group now contained two female Ranmas. "Its not fair!" she whined.

Rianas face showed open shock. "ShShara? But how?"

"Im not Shara and I aint Ryu either. My names Ranma Saotome and Im going back to bed." The martial artist stomped over to her blanket and threw herself down on it.

The remaining pigtailed girl turned to the only other person there she seemed to trust. "What is going on?" she asked Serena in a weak voice.

"I think weve"

"figured out what happened."

"Will you two stop that," roared Zel.

The two girls looked at one another. "We cant," said Lina.

"Why not? Whats wrong with you two?"

Lina took a deep breath as if to prepare for a difficult task. "Each of us has half of the Silver Imperium Crystal attached to our forehead. The result of this is a link that gives us access to each others thoughts. It is very difficult to distinguish between our own thoughts and the others without lots of concentration." Her forehead was beaded in sweat by the time she was done.

Everyone, including Riana, was staring at the two in shock and confusion. "Cant you block it some way?" asked Amelia.

"Weve been trying since"

"we woke up."

Zel could only shake his head. Life just seemed to be getting stranger by the moment. "Does that have something to do with Serenas fireball?"

"Were not sure," answered Serena. "But we think"

"it was a fluke. It shouldnt happen again."

"Fine, fine," said Zel as he rubbed at his temples. He could feel a headache coming on. "Now what about Ranma."

Both girls opened their mouths at the same time, but suddenly a very male Ranma was standing there again. In one hand was an empty teapot. "Im tired of hearing things in stereo. Ill explain." He moved to stand a few feet away from Riana and looked directly at her as he spoke.

"One thousand years ago the Moon Kingdom fought a battle against an evil known as Metallia. The war ended in a stalemate with the Moon Kingdom destroyed and Metallia imprisoned. You died, Serena died, the Dragon died, everyone died. However, Queen Serenity sent all of the souls into the future to be reborn. Your soul and the Dragons soul were fused as one though, and have remained as one up until now. Now something has split you from the Dragon, which means now there are two of me."

Riana looked scared and more than a little confused. "But arent you the Dragon?"

"Yes, but not willingly. And I have no knowledge of my past life except what has been shown in my dreams."

"This has to be some kind of joke."

Ranma began laughing wildly. "Thats right, a joke. Just one great big cosmic joke. I sure hope someone out there is having a good laugh at our expense." Still chuckling to himself, the martial artist wandered off into the surrounding forest. No one made a move to stop him.

The silence that had descended at Ranmas departure finally lifted when Serena stood and went to put an arm around Riana. The confused girl looked up at her princess and seemed to take some comfort in her presence. "If the Moon Kingdom was destroyed then where are we? Earth?"

Serena sighed. "Not exactly. Walk with me and Ill explain everything I can about our situation." With that, she led the girl in the direction opposite the one Ranma had taken.

"Well," said Amelia, "at least everyone is still alive."

Lina snorted. "Im not entirely sure thats a good thing. You will all be happy to know that we have been able to put a block on our thoughts. Its very annoying to have that girl in my head."

Zel looked in the direction Serena had gone and then looked down at Lina. "Remind me never to go anywhere with you again. To many strange things happen." He doubted they would get any traveling done that day so he left the camp to find a new rock to sit on.

Ranma stared straight ahead, eyes locked on the winding road before him. He didnt dare let them stray for fear of catching the eye of the one person he wished to have nothing to do with. Riana walked with Serena and Amelia several yards to his right. The few times she had attempted to engage him in conversation he had immediately began talking to Zelgadiss, who walked at his side. The chimera obviously didnt like being used in this manner, but Ranma could have cared less at that moment.

Thinking about his twin was enough to set his eyes wandering and he suddenly found himself looking over at the other group. Riana wore her hair unbound, but she continued to wear the same clothes he did since they fit her comfortably. He realized Serena was glaring at him furiously and he snapped his gaze to the front. Neither her nor Amelia seemed to like the way he was treating her. Lina, walking ahead of the group with Gourry, shot a disapproving look his direction from time to time as well.

It wasnt that he didnt like the girl. She seemed like a nice enough person to him. What made him avoid her was the fact that he knew exactly what her relation to the Dragon had been. The last thing he needed right now was another fiance.

They rounded a corner and Ranma could see a town in the distance. The sun was beginning to set and he was glad to know that they wouldnt be spending the night outside. Lina had promised that they would reach this town before nightfall even though they hadnt left the lake until late afternoon, but he hadnt been sure he believed her until now. It would be easier to avoid people in an inn rather than outdoors.

The party soon found themselves entering the small town of Pesh and began searching for a suitable inn. This wasnt hard to do since there was only one. It was large enough to accommodate all of them, but just barely. When they entered, Lina instantly went to one of the common room tables and sat down.

"Arent ya gonna get us rooms?" asked Ranma.

Lina gave him such a look of innocence that it was obviously faked. "I thought maybe wed eat first."

Everyone seemed content with this idea, but Ranma snorted. It was obvious that this was some kind of scheme worked up to get him to talk to Riana. He wasnt falling for it. Turning on his heels he headed for the door.

"Where are you going Ranma?" asked Serena.

"For a walk."

"Arent you hungry?"

"No." He was out the door before anyone could say more. Looking over his shoulder to make sure no one was following him, he began an in depth study of Pesh. This took all of fifteen minutes so he took to exploring the surrounding forest. This involved smashing rocks and breaking tree branches. The roving gang of bandits that had been preparing to sack the town left in a hurry upon seeing the martial artist clearing a wide path through the forest.

It was well past dark when he finally returned to the town. He figured everyone would be in their rooms by now, but when he was halfway to the inn a figure stepped out from between two buildings and stood blocking his path. From the light of the moon he could see that it was Serena. "What do you want?"

"Ranma Saotome, you should be ashamed of yourself! The way you treated Riana today was terrible."

"What do ya mean? I havent treated her like anything."

"Thats my point Ranma. I find that your actions today leave much to be desired." She cocked her head to one side as if listening to something and her eyes seemed to get far away. The crystal on her forehead caught the moonlight and sparkled faintly. Finally she turned her attention back to him. "Lina agrees with me and says to add the fact that shes seen better manners from a troll."

"Whatever." He moved to go around her, but she moved to block his path. "Leave me alone!" he snapped.

"Not until you tell me why you wont talk to Riana."

"Why the hell should I talk to her?"

Serenas eyes widened in anger. "Shes alone and scared in a world a thousand years beyond her own. Youre the one person who can provide a link to that lost life and yet you act as if she wasnt there."

"Cant she talk to you? You probably know more about that time than I do."

"Yes, but she sees me as her princess, not her friend. She wont confide in me the way she will in you."

"Maybe its better that way." He moved to go around her again and she made no move to stop him this time.

"Why?" she asked before he could take more than three steps. "Why wont you talk to her?" There was a pleading tone to her voice that made him stop.

After much staring at the empty street he finally turned to face her. "Her relation to my past self is not one that she will easily forget. The last thing I need on my hands right now is another fiancee."

Serena had a look of sadness in her eyes. "I know that. Ive already talked to her and she knows that you are not the man she loved a thousand years ago. I understand your feelings on the matter, but thats no excuse for the way youve been treating her. You could at least try to be friends with her."

The two stood looking at one another in silence for several minutes before Ranma spoke. "Maybe Ill try to be friends," he sighed. "But only friends."

Serena smiled and walked over to place a hand on his shoulder. "Thank you." That was all she said before heading back to the inn. Ranma remained in the middle of the street staring up at the stars for a few minutes after that.

Finally he turned to go back to the inn. He was heading for the front door when a soft noise sounded from around the back of the building. Curious, he went to investigate. Moving silently so as not to alert a potential attacker, he crept along the side of the inn and peeked around the corner. What he saw there made his heart lurch.

Riana was siting on the ground, back against the wall with her face buried in her hands. The noise he had heard was her softly weeping. He realized he was more than likely the cause of this emotional outburst and, remembering what Serena had said, decided to do something about it.

He didnt try to move quietly, but Rianas sobs drowned out the little noise he did make. When he placed a comforting hand on her shoulder she started and looked up at him with tear blurred eyes. "Hey," was all he said before squatting down next to her.

"Whwhat are you doing here?" she asked while trying to dry her eyes on her sleeves.

Ranma ignored the question and stared up at the night sky. "Nice night, huh?"

Riana seemed a little confused by his sudden change in attitude and stared at him for several moments before replying. "Yes."

He smiled. "Almost it looks like Earths sky, but the constellations are all different. Couldnt find my way around this world if I tried. Id be as lost as Ryoga."

"Whose Ryoga?"

"Someone I know from home." He began to go into great detail about Ryogas lack of direction sense and soon Riana was laughing instead of crying. When her laughter had died down he looked at her with a serious expression. "Im sorry about how I treated you today. I was a littleconfused about whole situation."

She smiled up at him. "I understand. Im not totally sure I know whats going on either."

"Friends then?"

"Friends," she agreed. It was hidden well, but he could detect a hint of sadness in her voice. "Tell me something, why do you change into a girl when splashed with cold water?"

"You mean Serena didnt tell you?" She shook her head. "Its a little confusing, but Ill do my best to explain." He then launched into a detailed explanation of his trip to China and his fall into the cursed spring of Jusenkyo. The spring in which Rianas twin sister had drowned so long ago.

Serena returned to the inn after talking with Ranma and immediately went to sit at the table Lina occupied by herself. "Well, that takes care of that."

Lina nodded. "Im glad that that little situation was resolved before it went too far."

"Its kind of sad though. Riana still has feelings for him even though hes not the same man. She says that much of the way he talks and acts is the same as before. At least he agreed to be her friend."

"They say that love can grow from the seeds of friendship. Maybe something will happen. Right now we have more important things to discuss though. Like what to do about us."

Serena was confused for a moment. "What about us?"

"I know youre smarter than Gourry," snapped Lina. "Try to act like it. Im talking about the crystals imbedded in our foreheads."

"Whats wrong with them? Now that weve figured out how to block our thoughts they might actually be useful."

"But we dont know that. They could be dangerous. We have to discover all that we can about them before we make any assumptions."

"I suppose youre right. Its really strange though. I feel as if Ive lost something, but at the same time its like something else has come to fill the vacancy. I dont understand it at all."

Lina nodded in understanding. "Thats why we have to figure these things out," she said tapping the crystal on her forehead. "Until we do I doubt a lot of things will make much sense."

Serena was silent for a few moments. "How much do you remember?"

"About your life? Not a whole lot. Mostly just flashes of unconnected images. It seems that only the parts of your life containing strong emotions remained after I had seen it all. What about you?"

"The same. Just random thoughts and feelings."

A mischievous grin crossed Linas face. "Youre going to have to tell me about Darien someday."

Serena felt the heat rising in her face. "We were talking about what to do about the crystal remember? I think we should discuss it in the morning. Im beat." She faked a large yawn to emphasize her point.

Lina smiled with barely contained amusement. "In the morning then." The two girls left the common room and began ascending the stairs leading to their rooms. Suddenly there came to them the sound of something tearing followed by a huge explosion from outside. Both girls exchanged glances and then dashed outside to see what the commotion was. The building across the street was now all over the street with the remains of its foundation glowing brilliantly in the fires that burned everywhere. The source of the destruction was readily apparent.

Not far down the street was a creature from a nightmare. It was about ten feet tall with two heads and three arms and legs. One head was a pasty green color and had a large mouth from which two fangs protruded. Two red eyes burned in the face like glowing cinders. The other head was that of an old man only slightly twisted to make it more horrifying. Where one of the arms should have ended in a hand, it instead ended in a sword blacker than the night surrounding it.

"Dalgar and"

"Koldan. But how?"

Zelgadiss, Gourry, and Amelia came charging through the inn door and stopped to stare at the creature before them. "So," said Zel with a twisted smile, "those two didnt completely escape the wild magic either."

Ranma and Riana came dashing around the side of the inn to join the others. "Oh, man," exclaimed Ranma, "not them again."

"Friend of yours?" asked Riana

"Not exactly. So does anyone have a plan or should we do this the usual way." Everyone exchanged glances and then shrugged. "Thought so. Its more fun like this anyway." Cracking his knuckles, the martial artist stepped forward.

Lina stepped up next to Ranma. "Maybe we should get his attention first. Fireball!" The fiery projectile shot forward, blazing brightly in the darkness. It connected with the Sword of Night and came flying back. Everyone threw themselves to the ground, as the inn became a very large torch. "Oh yeah, I forgot about that."

"So I was rightright. You are herehere." There was an echo to the creatures speech that Serena found highly annoying. She was beginning to sympathize with Zel in the matter of her and Linas speech pattern.

"You know, thats a good look for you guys," taunted Ranma.

"Mock us if you wantwant. You will soon find that there are many advantages to this form thoughthough." The Dalgar, Koldan monster moved forward with incredible speed to swing at Ranma with his sword. At the same time, one hand was making complicated gestures in the air. Ranma dodged the sword blow, but even as he did, a blast of ice hit him square in the chest. A very frozen martial artist landed in the middle of the street with a dull thud.

"Ranma!" screamed Riana.

"Damn," cursed Lina. Serena could feel a tinge of fear coming from the sorceress through their link. "He can cast spells at the same time as he attacks or defends. We are in big trouble."

"Hes going to pay!" Everyone turned to see a very angry Riana holding her henshin rod. "I will make him pay! Sol Star Power!" Nothing happened. She tried again and still nothing happened. Riana turned to Serena with a worried look. "Whats wrong? Why cant I transform?"

Serena didnt know why and she didnt have time to figure it out. "Moon Crystal Power!" Nothing happened. She tried again and still nothing happened. "Whats wrong? Why cant I transform?"

The others were staring at the two Scouts with troubled looks. "If you two cant fight then stay back while we take care of this," said Lina. "I dont want you getting hurt." She turned to fling some more spells at Kolgar, as she had dubbed him, when the ground beneath them exploded in a fountain of rock and fire. Everyone was sent flying in various directions.

Serena pushed herself off of the ground from where she had been thrown and looked around. The others were slowly picking themselves off of the ground as well, but it was obvious that everyone was in bad shape. She hurt in a dozen places and she could feel blood running down her face. Ranma was still an ice cube in the middle of the street and Kolgar was laughing wildly.

"You see foolsfools! Now I am more powerful than everever. You will all die at my hands and then I shall have your powerspowers."

Serena felt a sense defeat flood through her. She had no way of fighting this thing now, and the others looked as if they were in no condition to fight. Ranma could even be dead for all she knew. She slumped to the ground, unable to find the strength to even sit up. It was over. They had lost.

"NO!" The voice rebounded from the inside of her head as well as in her ears. "We will never give up!" shouted Lina. The crystal on her forehead was beginning to pulse with a soft white glow. "We will defeat you! We have the power to do so!" She threw one hand above her head and the pulsing in the crystal increased in intensity. "Moon Magic Transformation, Ignite!" A blinding white light exploded around Lina, and Serena was forced to shield her eyes. Out of the corner of her eye she could see Riana suddenly engulfed in a similar light only gold instead of white.

Then it was all over and everyone was staring at Lina in confusion and amazement.
