"It was foretold in the Dead Sea scrolls. The third one is called... Handy."
"Shinji, you must defeat it!"
"I... don't see it!"
A small HUD appeared in front of Shinji with a flashing blip on it.
"That is your target. Destroy it!"
Shinji marched Unit-01 around until he was standing, as best as he could tell, directly on the blip. "I don't see anything."
"Take one step to the right, Shinji," Misato directed.
He did so, and the blip winked out of existence.
There were cheers throughout NERV.
"He was born to pilot Eva," said Ritsuko, watching the monitor.
"Excellent job, Shinji. Now come back."
"But I didn't see anything."
"Well, it was definitely a blue reading. There are 96 more to deal with anyway, so you might get a glimpse of one."
-Later-
"Here ya go, Shinji." Misato handed Shinji a small jar filled with a blue paste.
"What's this?"
"That's what you defeated earlier."
"This? Where did you..."
"We scraped it off the bottom of Unit-01's foot. It's a real doozy."
"A doozy? But... what is it?"
"Handy Smurf. You can keep that as a souvenir."
